LAUNCHES ANONYMOUS TIPPING TOOL TO FIGHT CRIME

Citizens can send anonymous text and web tips to ICSO.

Iron County – November 29, 2011 The Iron County Sheriff’s Office has announced a new service to allow members of the public to provide anonymous tips to law enforcement. The service, called TipSoft, was recently announced by Attorney General Mark Shurtleff as a statewide initiative involving more than 50 law enforcement agencies throughout the State of Utah. Starting today, citizens can submit anonymous tips to the Iron County Sheriff’s Office through the Web, smartphone app, or by sending a text message to “CRIMES” (274637) with the keyword ICSOTIPS.

“It is the present and the future of alerting law enforcement to crime in our area” said Detective Sgt. Jody Edwards. “And with TipSoft, they can know that it’s safe for them to do the right thing without ever disclosing their identity.

TipSoft, which is made by Draper-based CrimeReports, allows agencies and members of the public to exchange messages back and forth through a completely secure and anonymous channel.

“With the launch of TipSoft, the Iron County Sheriff’s Office is demonstrating its commitment to protecting the community,” says Greg Whisenant, founder and CEO of CrimeReports. “Members of the public often have information that can help prevent or solve a crime. This tool gives them a safe way to share it with authorities.”

Since launching its mobile capabilities in 2009, TipSoft has received more than 2 million tips, 145,000 arrests have been made, 55,000 fugitives caught, more than $5.3 billion recovered in drugs and property, 11,000 vehicles recovered, and 22,000 weapons recovered.

Citizens are encouraged to use TipSoft to report information about any non-urgent illegal activity, such as unsolved crimes, vandalism, theft, the sale and distribution of drugs or information about crimes that are being planned in the community or in schools.
